Song of the week ending 16, Nov 2007

Karaaravindena padaaravindam
Mukhaaravinde viniveshayantham
Vatasya patrasya pute shayaanam
Baalam mukundam manasaa smaraami

With small beautiful hands, beautiful feet
Beatiful moon-like face, lies asleep
Sleeping on a lotus-leaf
Bala Krishna (child-krishna) I contemplate in my mind

Samhrutya lokaan vatapatra madhye
Shayaanam aadhyanthaviheena roopam
Sarveshwaram sarvahitaavataaram
Baalam mukundam manasaa smaraami

Controlling the entire world while lying in the lotus-leaf
Sleeping yet really of the form without any beginning and end
The Lord of everything and desiring the welfare of all beings
Bala Krishna (child-krishna) I contemplate in my mind

Indivara shaayamala komalaangam
Indraadi devarchithapaadapadmam
Bimbaadharam chaaru vishaalaroopam
Baalam mukundam manasaa smaraami

Having a beautiful body made up of bluish-black complexion
Having lotus-feet that is worshipped by gods like Indra etc.
Round face and pervasive body (pervading the entire universe)
Bala Krishna (child-krishna) I contemplate in my mind

Lambaalakam lambitha haara yastim
Sringaara leelankitha danktha pankthim
Bimbaadharam chaaru vishaalaroopam
Baalam mukundam manasaa smaraami

Having a big garland around his neck
His teeth showing essence of Sringaara
Round face and pervasive body (pervading the entire universe)
Bala Krishna (child-krishna) I contemplate in my mind

This song has lyrics which are part of the famous Bala Mukunda astakam (eight verses about child Krishna) written by Madhusudana Saraswathi. This song speaks about the form of child-Krishna as the ultimate reality of Brahman. This was one of the important aspect of Madhusudana Saraswathi's life that he equated Bala Krishna as the same as Nirguna Para Brahman thereby merging bhakthi and jnaana. The song has been recorded in my voice which can be found here. Please bear the noise, disturbance and awful singing as am not a singer.
