Song of the week ending 31, October 2008

Koorirul pole karuthirundulloree bheekara rupini aaraanu
Shonitha poykayil olathilaadidum neela malarkulay ennonam

Who is this woman with a fierce form which is so dark in complexion like darkness
Who is this woman dancing amidst blood like a set of blue flowers in the crimson lake

Yudham muthirthoru raktha kalathinkal nritham chavittuvathaaraanu
Prathyangakaanthi maracchulloree digvastradhaarini aaraanu

Who is this dancing on the blood spilled in the war-field
Who is this veiling the inner light and wearing the dress of directions (meaning that amidst the fierce form of AMMA, there is the inner light of Self always shining)

Theekanal pole uruttimizhikunna thrikannu moonullol aaraanu
Kaarkondalpole azhinjulanjeedina kaarkoonthalaalival aaraanu

Who is this with the third eye and fireballs coming out of the terrying glance
Who is this that has her hair all loose

Thannude kaalchuvattetu muppaaridam ninne kulunguvathenthaanu
Ee lasal kaamini thannude kaanthanaa shoolam dharicha sivanaanu

Who is this that is shaking the entire three worlds with her walking
It is this woman who is very attractive through her Self-luminosity and is Siva holding the trident (trishoola)

This is a song that speaks about the external form of AMMA and beautifully sung by Swami Amritasvaroopananda set in the Raga Bhimpalasi (Abheri). The song speaks about AMMA's external form as unattractive and fierce but internally AMMA is filled with compassion, love and attraction. The contrast is exactly what we see as the world - the world externally is attractive but internally gives only sorrow but the ultimate reality of Brahman is unattractive (as it cannot give us sensual pleasures) but internally blissful - the world externally seen as names and forms is not real (though it appears real externally) but unreal whereas the ultimate reality of Brahman is externally unreal (as it cannot be perceived) but is real as the indwelling Self or essence of all beings. The song has been recorded in my voice which can be found here.
