Song of the week ending 16, January 2009

Manikya chilaye marakatha kodiye taale taale lo
Maadhavan tankaay meen vizhi nankaay taale taale lo

Hail to you O Mother who are like a sculpture of emerald and like a flag with sapphires
Hail to you O Mother who is the consort of Vishnu and possessing fish-like eyes

Paandiyan kulathil thondriya kiliye taale taale lo
Aandavan madiyil aadidum kaniye taale taale lo
Naatrishai oliye etriya vilakke taale taale lo
Potriya perku pukhay tarum nilaye taale taale lo

Hail to you O Mother who was born in the pandiya kula
Hail to you who dances in the lap of Sadasiva
Hail to you O Mother who are a lamp lit to show the path to realization for all
Hail to you O Mother who is the refuge to people surrendering unto you

Meghalai choodum melliya idaye taale taale lo
Sinkathin ulavum seethala nilave taale taale lo
Paavalar yaarum paadiya azhake taale taale lo
Moovulaka aalum mohana porule taale taale lo

Hail to you O Mother whose beautiful body is like a jewel to the clouds (and worlds)
Hail to you O Mother who has the strength of a lion and has a calm disposition
Hail to you O Mother who has been the subject matter of many songs
Hail to you O Mother who is beautiful and praised by all the three worlds

This is a tamil song praising Devi (Divine Mother) and set in Sree Ragam. The tune is touching, melodious and slow-flowing like the flow of a river. The song's slow-flow denotes the mental state of a jnaani or bhakthi wherein the mind is calm like an ocean without waves. The song has been recorded in my voice which can be found here.
